| At the early stage of its existence Chichen Itza was a flourishing Puuc city, however its peak was in 950 AD when it became one of the most important centers for worship of Kukulkan (the mayan version of Quetzalcoatl). Kukulkan is depicted on many of the monuments from that time, which are built in the typical "Toltec" style. There are a lot of hypotheses on what was the relationship between the mayans and toltecs, but what is certain is that Chichen Itza became the capital of a very powerful multiethnic state. |
