Teotihuacan was probably founded around 100-150 BC. In 1-150 AD began the construction of the two main buildings in the city - the pyramids of the Moon and Sun. The largest architectural development was probably in the period 200-400 AD. During this period most of the structures the remains of which can be seen at the site today were built. Due to lack of historical sources the original name of Teotihuacan is not known. The Aztecs gave it the name by which it is known today ("The place where the gods live"). It is also not known by which ethnic group was the city founded. Suggestions include Otomi, Totonachi and the Nahua.
